GRAIN PATTERNS

Edge Grain

Edge grain cutting boards are crafted from the long sides of the wood, creating a surface with tight, linear grain lines and excellent stability. This orientation provides a strong, durable cutting surface that resists warping and maintains its form through daily use. Edge grain boards offer a perfect balance of functionality and elegance, making them a popular choice for both home cooks and professionals.

End Grain

End grain cutting boards expose the cross-section of the wood fibers, forming a distinctive checkerboard pattern prized for both beauty and performance. The vertical grain orientation allows knife blades to sink between the fibers rather than slicing through them, preserving sharpness and minimizing surface damage. Known for their self-healing qualities and exceptional durability, end grain boards represent the gold standard in premium cutting surfaces.

Face Grain

Face grain cutting boards showcase the wide, flat surface of the wood, bringing out its richest colors, grain patterns, and natural beauty. This orientation highlights the artistry of the wood itself, making it ideal for serving or display pieces. However, because the fibers run lengthwise across the surface, face grain boards are more prone to knife marks and wear over time.

Live Edge

Live edge boards preserve the natural outer contour of the tree, retaining the organic shape, texture, and character formed by nature itself. This style highlights the raw beauty of the wood, including subtle curves, natural transitions, and unique variations that make every piece one of a kind. Often favored for serving, display, or statement pieces, live edge boards emphasize craftsmanship and authenticity over uniformity.

Rough Cut

Rough cut lumber boards celebrate the material in its most honest, unrefined state, showcasing visible saw marks, texture, and the natural irregularities left from the milling process. This approach emphasizes a rugged, workshop-driven aesthetic that highlights the transformation from raw lumber to finished piece. Valued for their tactile character and authentic craftsmanship, rough cut boards are often chosen for display, serving, or accent use rather than heavy cutting.

FINISHES

Tung Oil

Pure tung oil is a premium, plant-based drying oil that cures within the wood to create a durable, water-resistant finish. It enhances depth, contrast, and character in the grain while offering longer-lasting protection than non-drying oils. Once fully cured, tung oil is food-safe and highly resistant to moisture.

Care: Clean with mild soap and water. Avoid prolonged soaking. Occasional refresh coats may be applied to maintain luster and protection.

Mineral Oil

Mineral oil is a classic, food-safe finish widely trusted for cutting boards and kitchen essentials. It penetrates deeply into the wood, enriching natural color and grain while providing immediate moisture protection. Because mineral oil does not harden, it gradually washes out with use and cleaning—this is normal and expected.

Care: Reapply whenever the wood looks dry or dull. Clean with mild soap and warm water only; never soak or place in a dishwasher.

Beeswax

Beeswax adds a warm, natural sheen and a smooth, inviting feel to handcrafted wood pieces. Often used in combination with oils, it enhances moisture resistance while preserving a soft, traditional finish. Beeswax helps slow moisture loss and protects the surface without creating a heavy film.

Care: Buff lightly with a soft cloth as needed. Reapply when the surface loses its sheen or feels dry.

Carnauba Wax

Carnauba wax is a premium, high-performance natural wax known for its hardness and durability. It creates a smooth, polished surface with enhanced moisture resistance and a subtle, refined sheen. Commonly blended with softer waxes, it improves wear resistance and longevity.

Care: Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry promptly. Occasional buffing restores shine and protection.
